Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: BHT Guy
5041 BHT with Dr Arvind 1 Month Update. “I had 5041 BHT all from my legs
with Dr Arvind in New Delhi. I have shed the majority of my grafts and
unfortunately the picture doesn’t show the full story. I have a large
number of tiny hairs sprouting and I can feel stubble over most of my
scalp when I rub my fingers lightly over it. The redness on my scalp is
not noticeable to the naked eye, and from a short distance it looks as
if I have a light rash on my legs. The upper calf and lower thigh areas
have healed much quicker than other areas. …”

Drugs: Propecia’s Side Effects Less Common Than Originally
Expected. In a July 2004 article in Arch Dermatol, over 180 test
subjects participated in a study designed to evaluate variations in
sexual and erectile function in patients taking 1 mg of finasteride for
androgenetic alopecia. The study concluded that “sexual side effects are
actually much less common than reported in clinical trials. The sexual
function of all patients remained stable during treatment with 1 mg of
finasteride.”

All Natural & Supplements: Protandim to be Released Feb 2005 !
If you believe that anti-oxidants can help fight hairloss, you may want
to look into the Feb 2005 release of Protandim. According to the
distributor, this product has been demonstrated to decrease oxidation by
as much as 60% in humans in just the first 30 days of intake. Protandim
is not an antioxidant. It works by inducing the body to produce
more of its own natural antioxidant enzymes, eg: Superoxide Dismutase
(SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX) etc. to fight
oxidation. Protandim allows these enzymes to be produced within
the cells where oxidative stress actually occurs. This is in
contrast to traditional antioxidant supplements which have to pass
significant digestive and absorption barriers.

All Natural & Supplements: Beta-sitosterol Now The Most Popular
Supplement in the Forum. Lately many in the All Natural &
Supplements forum have added Beta-sitosterol to their regimen.
Some even reported good results from it. Here’s a brief description
about this supplement: “Beta-sitosterol is the active ingredient in saw
palmetto berries, which have been used for centuries to treat patients
with prostate and urinary problems. The active ingredient in saw
palmetto as well as other herbal remedies such as pygeum, stinging
nettle, and pumpkin seeds is beta-sitosterol. One capsule usually
contains 300mg of beta-sitosterol. You would have to eat 2 lbs. of saw
palmetto to get the same amount of beta-sitosterol one 300mg capsule.
This is 3000 times more potent than saw palmetto.”. Some recent
comments from people who reported good results with this supplement.

Topical: Shiseido To Introduce New Product Containing ADENOSINE.
Leading Japanese cosmetic manufacturer Shiseido announced that it has
discovered a hair-growth property called adenosine, one of the in vivo
substances that exist in the human body. According to Shiseido,
studies have shown that adenosine directly affects hair papillae, a key
in hair production; consequently, the output of FGF-7, a hair-growth
factor, is increased. The product has received approval as an
active ingredient for medicated cosmetics from the Ministry of Health,
Labor and Welfare. Launch date: March 2005.

Topical: Adenosine Responsible for Minoxidil’s Effectiveness as
a Hairloss Treatment. Recent studies indicate that the “effect of
minoxidil is mediated by adenosine, which triggers intracellular signal
transduction via both adenosine A1 and A2 receptors, and that the
expression of sulfonylurea receptor 2B in dermal papilla cells might
play a role in the production of adenosine.”

Topical: Should Coal Tar Products Carry Cancer Warnings?
Many of us use shampoos formulated with coal tar to treat dandruff and
certain scalp inflammatory conditions. There are discussions whether
topical treatments containing coal tar are dangerous. There are in fact
studies which show that coal tar can cause cancer if applied topically.
For example, a study conducted by University Medical Center Nijmegen,
The Netherlands suggested that “because of the potential carcinogenicity
of coal tar, as clearly demonstrated both in animal studies and from
occupational exposure, careful consideration should be given to the use
of coal tar preparations in dermatological practice.”

then followed by a more technical discussion about DHT, physiologic
changes in the follicle, minoxidil, programmed cell death, caspase 3,
and more. This is a good introduction to terms you hear in the forum
quite often, eg: (NF)kappa-B, TGF-B and A etc.

Education: Hair Length & Hair Diameter. Courtesy of
TAMGOHL “On a normal head of hair, hairs achieve their maximum diameter
when they are at approximately 25% of their eventual length. After
they hit their peak thickness, hair shaft diameters decline little by
little over the remaining length of the growth phase. Thus, for
the vast majority of the growth phase, hairs are actually getting
thinner. Also, hair shaft diameter correlates with hair length --
i.e., longer hair is thicker hair.”

Education: Studies Examining the Genetics of Male Pattern
Baldness. A study by Wright State University School of Medicine
conducted a study to examine the genetics of male pattern baldness. The
purpose of the current study was to explore the relationship between
family history and expression of AGA in a sample of men from the general
community. The study concluded that “the probability of male pattern
hair loss is dependent on family history and age. Hair loss in a man's
father also appears to play an important role in increasing a man's risk
of hair loss, either in conjunction with a history of hair loss in the
mother or hair loss in the maternal grandfather.”

Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: # of
Grafts per Sq Cm, FUE vs Strip. According to Dr. Arvind, dense packing

grafts.

Hair Multiplication: Surprising report on human hair
cloning comes from China. “Previously unknown group of Dr. Zheng
Men from china independently from the more proclaimed scientists and
hair transplantation clinics from US and Europe conducted human hair
cloning experiments. They used a technique of combining and
transplanting various cell types of the hair follicle from humans to
induce new hair growth. This, in principle, it is identical to the
methods of hair cloning pursued by Ken Washenik and his colleagues from
the Bosley Medical.”

by far the worst repair case I have seen in person. Dr. Cole had
to deal with a head that has gone through 13 small strip surgeries of 50
grafts each, 3 scalp lifts that produced 3 huge scars down the center
all the way to back, 4 scar revisions from ear to ear that caused even
wider scarring, and last but not least, tattooing all over the head that
eventually turned his scalp color to blue. We are showing the part where
Dr. Cole grafted the ears and the neck area that had almost no hair.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Feller: Dr Feller Contacts Dr Unger about Hair Transplant Follicular
Protracting.
Attaining the correct angle is not always an easy accomplishment in the
execution of Follicular Unit Extraction. Even 5 degrees off center can
result in partial or complete transection. Dr. Feller uses a standard
electrolysis needles to facilitate acquisition of the TRUE and PROPER
angle of the hair follicle relative to the scalp surface. He places an
electrolysis needle into the target FU prior to punch scoring. By doing
so he was able to ensure that not only was the correct angle attained,
but was also able to get a reliable idea of the actual depth of that
particular target FU.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Cole: Repair Case – Strip Repair Case, Dr.
Cole’s Patient. This is a class 6 repair case. The patient
used to wear a hair piece. He had one session of mini-grafts placed into
holes in 2003. He could tell immediately that this procedure would
yield an unnatural, pluggy result so he rapidly sought a repair
solution.
Dr. Cole performed 3000 grafts from the front to the back. In a single
procedure he has obtained excellent coverage in the front. The
rear of the scalp needs one more session (the back or crown almost
always requires 2 to 3 times as much work to achieve the same degree of
coverage). Most of the grafts were dense packed into the front.
Dr. Cole and his staff also needed to deal with big plugs and the
results are showing a softer natural look. The patient can live a normal
life without the hard maintenance of a hair piece and he is very excited
about his 2nd procedure.

case illustrates the use of hyper-acute angle placement to maximize
recipient site coverage for several bald patients.

significance of this case is to illustrate with photos and accompanying
measuring instrument frontal hairline reconstruction at 60 grafts per sq
cm. Note that normal density is about 40 grafts per sq cm.
Nov 29 - Dec 05, 2004
Hair Transplant - Dr. Arvind: Hyper-acute Angle Placement for Hairline
Restoration. For some patients with extensive thinning, eg: a
norwood 5 or 6, Dr.Arvind advocates the formation of recipient sites at
a much more acute angle for such patients. Instead of having the
hair growing at 30 degrees to the scalp, they almost lie flat,
i.e.,15-20 degrees). According to Dr. Arvind Poswal, the rationale
for such an acute angulation in hairline placement is that it makes the
hair almost lie on the scalp leading to a greater degree of coverage
than would be possible if the hair were, comparatively speaking,
standing up. Dr. Arvind Poswal thinks that hyperacute angulation
is especially helpful in those with extensive hairloss and a limited
donor supply.

1) The patient be asked to shave off the donor area a couple of days
before starting the surgery.
2) Do not choose the non growing hair as well as the very slow growing
hair for transplant purposes.

and the recipient sites BUZZED 7 months after the patient’s first
procedure. HairSite’s long time forum members are all very pleased
with the results this patient is having. Many considered this top notch
FUE results by Dr. Jones.

Hair Transplant - Dr. Woods: The Woods Technique: Minimally Invasive from
Start to Finish. Invented and perfected by Dr. Woods and Dr. Campbell,
The Woods Technique created unprecedented upheavals in the surgical hair
restoration industry because for the first time in decades, hair
transplant can be done non invasively without cutting through the donor
site using a scalpel.
True to the "Do No Harm" principle that is defined in the world's first
and only Patient Rights Declaration, Dr. Woods and Dr. Campbell practice
their "minimally invasive" hair transplant technique to the fullest:
from the time the donor follicle is extracted to the point when the
follicle is transplanted into the recipient site.
HairSite is proud to present world’s exclusive footage showing how the
micro slits are created in the patient's recipient site using a 21 gauge
needle under The Woods Technique. See for yourself that this is a
truly "MINIMALLY INVASIVE" procedure.

Topicals: Is liposomes/nanosomes a superior and cost effective
vehicle for delivering minoxidil ? A study by AmorePacific R&D Center,
Yongin-si, Korea showed that “there was no significant difference in the
activity of anagen induction of C57BL/6 mouse between 3 % minoxidil
solution (propylene glycol and ethanol) and 0.5 % minoxidil nanoparticle
solution.”. Bryan raised an interesting issue as to whether
liposomes/nanosomes are uniquely able to do anything that ordinary

concentrations. Click here for a lengthy discussion.

Hair Transplant: Hair Transplant Donor Sealant for FUE
Procedures. Dr. Arvind offers pictorial comparison of the FUE donor area
7 days post op WITH and WITHOUT use of donor sealant. Donor sealing is a
new approach some FUE doctors are using. According to Dr. Arvind Poswal,
while at present he does not think that donor sealing is a must, but it
is beneficial in people with whitish or darker complexion. In these
patients, the pinpoint hypopigmentation may be visible (on close
scrutiny after shaving the donor area) In people with fair skin it will
probably be immaterial. Click here for photos and full commentary by Dr.
Arvind Poswal

Hair Transplant: Hair Transplant Case Study: Body Hair to Scalp
Transplant – Dr. Arvind Poswal. Dr. Arvind Poswal provides in-depth
documentation, photos and discussion about one of his patients who had
body hair transplantation done. The grafts were taken from the chest of
his patient and transplanted on a small vacant area of scalp to be able
to easily observe the growth without confusing them with the scalp hair.
That was done on the right side of hairline. Simultaneously FUSE (FUE)
grafts from scalp were placed on the left side of the hairline.
According to Dr. Arvind Poswal, the questions that need to be answered
for BHT:
1). Yield--how much %age of grafts will survive and at what duration
post op will the growth start.
2). Will the body hair assume characteristics of scalp hair.
3). Donor area scarring.
Dr. Arvind Poswal’s findings:
1.Yield- The yield of the transplanted body hair and the time taken for
them to start growing is at par with the transplanted scalp hair.
2.The body hair have grown longer on the scalp than they grew on chest.
3.The donor area -chest-shows mild hypertrophic scars (whitish spots).
Though the patient was not concerned about that scarring but Dr. Arvind
Poswal has now adopted the policy of using donor sealant to minimize/
get rid of this too in all body hair cases. Click here to view photos
